PS Vita has 'better chance' than 3DS - EA

EA Labels president Frank Gibeau says there was "some confusion" about Nintendo's handheld, lauds new features in Sony's upcoming portable.

The PlayStation Vita's release plans haven't been finalized yet, but there's no shortage of people in the industry willing to weigh in on its prospects. Last month, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli expressed his skepticism about the handheld, saying it "might be too late" in a world focused on tablets and mobile devices. Earlier this month, Heavy Iron Studios' president and CEO Lyle Hall joined the naysayers, saying simply, "People don't want it."

Now Electronic Arts' recently appointed president of EA Labels Frank Gibeau has offered his assessment of the hardware, and it's a bit more positive than the previous prognosticators. Speaking to CVG at Gamescom, Gibeau said the Vita is well positioned because of "some really unique innovation in the control scheme, the technology and the screen." He also suggested the system would fare better than the 3DS, which posted disappointing sales out of the gate.

"I don't think they're quite in the same boat as the 3DS…the 3DS was a really interesting piece of technology, but I think there was some confusion over it and the title slate was a little different," Gibeau said, adding, "I think Vita has a better chance because it has a stronger title slate at launch. The PSP's had a great run in Europe as a device; it seems to have reached a much larger audience here than it did in North America. So I think they've got a good shot. We're going to publish a few games on it and see how it develops."

Sony's latest efforts in the portable device sector haven't proven too fruitful for the Japanese giant. Most recently, Sony discontinued production of the PSP Go in Japan, following its rocky launch in 2009, and the PlayStation Phone--the Xperia Play--was initially sold for $200 in May and then was quickly cut to $100 in July. The PS Vita will launch in Japan later this year, with North American and European releases following next year.

The thing is, that's exactly what I loved about the PSP. Portable games were no longer limited to simple, casual games. Finally, there was a portable that bared some resemblence to what we were playing on consoles. I think you're right in saying that Sony suffered from pretty much ignoring the casual market, though. However, it doesn't look like that will be a problem with the Vita; the launch lineup strikes a good balance of simple, casual games and "proper" hardcore titles.

The reason EA say that is because they make crappy cartoony games for Nintendo. Like the upcoming fifa 12 3ds. While the Vita version will be ps3 like. Shut up EA. You know nothing.

I am interested to see what the Vita can achieve... in my opinion the PSP was bad and could not compete with the lower spec DS, the reason being the PSP was trying to get hardcore gaming on the move where as the DS was aimed at casual gamers and appealed to a wider audience, i own the 3DS and YES i am disapointed by the current games that are available, on the whole though it is not a bad system at all and i do like it, when the Vita comes out i probably will buy one if it does live up to expectation!

For now, I will stick with my PSP. As for the 3DS, I think it is good hardware that I have enjoyed since the day I got it (regardless of the 3D feature).

The N64 was the last good thing Nintendo did. Now they seem to make everything for 10 year olds.
Playstation however just seems better. There games seem more entertaining and mature.

@james0718: Yeah it was very unnecessary...I guess the sense that it is 3D, anybody would have to buy it just because of the new feature >___>

Technically, the PS vita doesn't come out until legit the 31st of December. So since by that time i will not have school, i am gonna stay up and wait to go to the store and get the Awesometasticness presence of the PS Vita!!!!!!!!!

I want the vita to do well but the only real way I can see the vita doing well is if it could support the android app Market. In the world of iPhones and android, mobile gaming has taken off with these apps. The vita needs to grab these people. The problem why the pspGO failed is because the pricing of the digital download games where shockingly over priced. I just hope the vita won't fall into the same problem.

Could they stop with the online crap and deliver great software with great graphics and game play? Because when they develop that other crap the stuff I mentioned seems to suffer?

@jedilink109: That's true, but the DS hadn't already been released and flopped big time like the 3DS has

In my personal oppinion the whole 3D thing on the DS was unnecesary.

Yes, also don't forget the lack of first party titles at launch. I feel Nintendo poorly planned the 3DS's launch or were just not ready for it altogether. If they had launched it soon after E3 2010, I bet more gamers would have bought one due to the hype.

    @serious

Well then gentlemen, I stand corrected. I'm still not sure I agree with Mr. Gibeau's comment about confusion with the 3DS, though. I think price and lack of interest in 3D is more to blame on sales than anything else.
