Gamescom 2011

Gran Turismo 5 speeds off with Gamescom's top prize

Convention's jury crowns Sony's long-awaited, 3D-enabled racing game as best of show, best console title; PlayStation Move, Guild Wars 2, Crysis 2 also take prizes.

Every year after the Electronic Entertainment Expo, a panel of game journalists from top press outlets convene to bestow the Game Critics Awards on the convention's top games. Nintendo's 3DS handheld took top honors this year, along with Bethesda and id's postapocalyptic shooter-driving game Rage.

Today, Gamescom announced the winners of its own equivalent of the Game Critics Awards. A jury of press and industry figures selected by the organizers of the Cologne, Germany-based convention handed out awards in seven categories. Gran Turismo 5, the long-awaited racing game from Polyphony Digital and Sony Computer Entertainment, won in two of those categories: Best of Gamescom and Best Console Game.

Sony also earned another trophy for Best Hardware Accessories with its PlayStation Move motion-sensing system, due out in North America on September 19. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and 5th Cell snagged the Best Handheld/Mobile Game prize with Super Scribblenauts, and NCsoft got the Best Online Game award for Guild Wars 2.

The Best PC Game honor went to the recently delayed Crysis 2, which will also be out on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Curiously, the jury also handed out an award in a Best Family Entertainment category, which Nintendo nabbed with Kirby's Epic Yarn for the Wii.

Best of Gamescom: Gran Turismo 5 (Sony Computer Entertainment)
Best Hardware Accessories: PlayStation Move (Sony Computer Entertainment)
Best Console Game: Gran Turismo 5 (Sony Computer Entertainment)
Best Handheld/Mobile Game: Super Scribblenauts (Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment)
Best Online Game: Guild Wars 2 (NCsoft)
Best PC Game: Crysis 2 (EA/Crytek)
Best Family Entertainment: Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Nintendo)

    Wow, fail Gamescom is fail. Cataclysm doesnt get online game of the year, Playstaion Move actually won a prize, thas amazing too, especially with the 3DS and somehow a game that took 7 years to make (more then that actually) won two of the awards including Best of Gamescom. I'm not sure how Kirby is family entertainment at its' best, but I didnt see much that went under that category so whatever.

    It's not surprising, and GT5 WILL be amazing in so MANY aspects, but seriously, what the hell is "Gamescom"...

    I hope GT5's gonna be good, it's the only PS3 game left to buy for me this year since LBP2 has been delayed. Epic Yarn is out in less than a month, that's something I'm also looking forward to

    I propose an award for two things:
    1.) An award for top developer not yet developing anything.
    2.) Best console not yet created.
    Bonus award.) Best gamer who never played.

    Look at all the SalerianChemist hate. Come on guys, if you're going to rail against fanboys don't discriminate. Look at all the Sony fanboys like luna_chanfui who are raking in the thumbs up. A fanboy is a fanboy, regardless of their choice of corporation, and they ALL give us regular gamers a bad name.

    Now as to Gran Turismo 5 being the best racing game well that's 1) premature (I doubt many people have got quality hands-on time with the game yet) and 2) subjective. Different strokes for different folks!

    @theku

    You should learn to differentiate between fact and opinion. You may prefer PS3 exclusives, others may not. There are plenty of people who prefer 360 exclusives and plenty of people who prefer Wii exclusives as well. You haven't mentioned any facts in that statement of yours 8).

    Awards for games that are not complete do make sense, especially to shareholders. In today's market the only games that get the funding they need are games that they are sure will make money. And if a game has been in development for a long time, what easier way to prove to the people paying for the development that they should keep paying then by showing them that it is winning trade show awards and getting acclimates.

    After the game is released the best award us as consumers can give them is to buy the game and support their hard work and innovation.

    I think Blizzard games would get the "Slowest Game Ever Developed" award.

    The only GT game I own is the very first one and it was GREAT (Even though I was like 5 and didn't know what I was doing.) I can't wait to see how the series has changed.

    THESE WERE DEVELOPERS CHOSEN BY A CONVENTION COMPANY TO HAVE AWARDS THAT MEAN NOTHING TO ME AS A CONSUMER AND GAMER. MY POINT IS THAT WE HAVE AWARDS FOR THIS NOW (GAMES THAT ARENT EVEN OUT YET). WHAT NEXT AN AWARD FOR PEOPLE THAT GIVE AWARDS??????????
    OVER 7 YEARS TO DEVELOP A GAME (GT5) AND ITS GETTING AWARDS. IT SHOULD GET ONE FOR BEING THE SLOWEST GAME EVER DEVELOPED.

    GeOstyle your an idiot have you even played the game? so how can you say its barebones when you havent even played the game to begin with. obviously it won for a reason because its a pretty damn good game. now be honest with yourself your probably not a fan of racing games which is fine because neither am i but i wont deny how great GT5 is turning out from what ive seen/read. you have to admit barebones was a stupid comment because the GT games have always offered more than any other racing games but you had to have played them to know that. with that comment its obvious you havent or just dont like racing games in general.

    Yeah no worries mate Honestly, I feel sorry for people that can't play both Forza 3 and GT5; they don't know what they are missing out on, both brilliant games. @Lunahawk83
    Yeah he's (SalarianChemist) stirring up crap and even the devout IGN followers are giving him sh*t, it's pretty funny.

    @BARDICUNDERLORD
    Games that's aren't complete get awards all the time....for being the best games displayed at trade-shows. Look at E3; a game like, for example, Rage may be awesome at the trade-show and thus get awards for being the best of the show but when it is released, it may disappoint a lot of people and not live up to expectations.
    I.e. with Gran Turismo 5, it won all these awards because it was thought of to be the best game of the show by the judges, and thus expectations are now even higher for the game's release (they were already unbelievably high). Knowing that it's Polyphony Digital, they won't disappoint.

    @ Evo8u, I'm not going to lie to you, I really did enjoy prologue more than Forza 3. I think that mainly has to do with the fact that it's Gran Turismo though. It's the racing simulator I grew up with, so it's bound to make me a little biased. It's just my roots
