Crysis 2 Multiplayer Hands-On

Crytek unveiled two multiplayer modes at Gamescom, so we went hands-on with them to see how long we could survive against the developers.

While we had already seen New York city torn apart in Crysis 2, we had yet to get some hands-on time with the futuristic first-person shooter. However, at this year’s Gamescom, developer Crytek let us loose on a new multiplayer build, allowing us to get a feel for the shooting and experience humiliating defeat at the hands of the developers.

Before we were let loose on a map, we were given some details about the multiplayer. The team behind it consists of more than 70 people at Crytek UK--many of the same people who worked on the acclaimed Timesplitters. There will be six game modes, though we were able to get our hands on only two: Team Instant Action and Alien Crash Site. While Team Instant Action is standard team deathmatch fare, Alien Crash Site is a new twist on a capture-the-flag style of gameplay. An alien ship fires a drop pod onto a location on the map. The two opposing teams then try to clear the drop site of hostiles and then defend it from the other team.

Like the single-player maps, the multiplayer maps are set in a postapocalyptic vision of New York. The first is Rooftop Gardens, which is set on top of a skyscraper, giving you plenty of room to jump around and snipe enemies. The second is Impact, which is set in two buildings that have crashed together, creating a mish-mash of stairwells and concrete rubble. Before each match you can choose to play as one of five preset classes, as well as build custom ones. There are 80 ranks to work through, which Crytek estimates will take around 80 hours to unlock. You can also use nanosuit modules to customise your character, improving attributes such as agility and stealth.

We jumped into an Alien Crash Site match, playing as a regular solider. The first thing that struck us was the detail in the environment, with piles of rubble, broken walls, and a distant New York skyline all visible from the rooftop. A marker let us know where the alien dropship was about to deploy, which we could also see in the sky on the rooftop level. We headed down to the drop site, only to be greeted by a mass of aliens, ready to send us swiftly back to where we came from. Though AI-controlled, the aliens acted intelligently, hiding behind cover and flanking us to gain the advantage. Though we were able to dispatch them, the opposing team then appeared and promptly laid waste to our team.

After respawning, we attempted to exact our revenge and headed back to the drop site. We took advantage of our nanosuit’s special abilities, which were armor and stealth. Armor increased our defenses, allowing us to withstand long barrages of bullets, while stealth activated a Predator-style cloaking device. Both were powered by a limited energy supply represented by a small meter at the bottom of the screen, which recharged slowly as we played. As we made our way to the drop site, we noticed how fast the game felt, allowing us to quickly spin around and take out multiple enemies. Shooting felt satisfying, with our rifle having a nice amount of recoil, requiring us to shoot in short bursts. The usual shooter mechanics of aiming down the sight, crouching to steady our weapon, and pistol-whipping melee attacks were all present and correct, as well as an enhanced jumping ability that allowed us to jump higher and climb up ledges. None of this mattered though, as the superior abilities of the developers left us in constant pools of blood on the floor as we suffered the humiliation of defeat. Crysis 2 will be out on March 22, 2011, in North America and on March 25, 2011, in Europe. Check gamescom.gamespot.com for more of our coverage from Cologne.

    Oh god... it will come to consoles too, i hope that Crytec take feedback, because probably everyone want the consoles to get the downgraded version and the PC to get the awesome one.

    I FULLY AGREE WITH YOU!
    Imagine....
    March 23,2011 IGN Daily Fix (a a day after release):
    Jessica Chobot: "All consoles gamers who have purchased the recently released Crysis 2 on PS3/Xbox360 were left devastated when the game after a few hours of play had caused the internal CPU and other components of both console brands to overheat and severely damage the gaming systems. It seems like Crytek's new release is just too much for HD consoles to handle. Those affected can call Crytek for a full refund and Microsoft/Sony for a new console replacement, all paid for by Crytek."

    March 25,2011 IGN Daily Fix
    Jess: "Former PC developer Crytek has announced its closure due to massive loss of assets due to the Crysis 2-destroying-consoles debacle. It looks like Crytek paid the ultimate price for shifted its focus on console gamers while abandoning its loyalty to PC gaming. "

    (This is a joke. I hold no ill feelings towards Crytek or console gamers for I am a console gamer too LOL)

    Is it just me or does Crysis 2 look worse in terms of graphics to Crysis 1? It went from photo-realism to just pretty graphics. Oh wait.

    Consoles.

    Thanks a bunch for stalling the advancing of gaming technical excellence. Why cant they just release a full awesome version for PC and an extremely dumbed down one for consoles? >

    i think the only thing people ,who will buy the console verisons of the game, will see is the immense display of FIREWORKS coming from their PS3/XBOX 360 when they start to play the game

    Yes I believe that's correct.

    @woonsa You sir must not know the function of a beta. The beta's purpose is to iron out any wrinkles in the game. Since Crysis was already on PC and the requirements lowered, any gaming rig powerful enough to run Crysis can run 2 without much worry. However, Crysis was never on consoles, so any kind of problems may arise, such as a serious framerate drop, laggy servers, etc. Consoles here NEED the prioritization if Crysis 2 wants to have sales at all on consoles.

    @MEDzZ3RO I was talking about the PC version. Crysis already had 3D via NVidia glasses (I believe). But alas, they included it to compete with KZ3.

    @k1ll8_saurav
    Crysis never came to the consoles.The console 3D idea only came about after all the 3D hype with KZ3 included.I still have to say having played both Crysis and Killzone 2 that Killzone's AI is better,on the hardest setting in a multiplayer bot match you could believe they were human players apart from the fact that the bots are often better and more accurate then the average Killzone gamer.

    @woonsa
    I don't see why most PC only gamers are so surprised at that.Consoles have been more dominant in terms of sales and practicality for awhile now also Crytek know how to make a game for PC but console is new territory and a beta is likely more needed on the console versions.

    @k1ll8_saurav
    Well that's the problem. Crytek ain't prioritizing the PC over the console. There's a new closed 'beta' that's coming out, and guess who's the first to try that out? Console gamers. Yeah right.

    @nyranasaurus In case you haven't noticed, Crytek care a heck lot about their graphics. If it wasn't optimized for PC first, then it would've looked like s#!t. To Crytek, these supposed "awesomesauce console graphics" is like Pacman's creators looking at Pacman and then Crisis and exclaiming, "OMFG! Pacman has t3h bezzst ub3r l33t gr4f1x!!!"

    @MEDzZ3RO Just for the record, Crysis already had intelligent AI and 3D capability. Not sure about the melee though. KZ3 is just beginning to implement them.

    @woonsa PC gamers have a lot more than console gamers. Console games still don't have decent RTS games, whereas PC has World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander (that works, unlike consoles). They also have the original Far Cry, the original Crysis, ARMA, Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (if that's your thang), and tons more.

    Don't be selfish and let console gamers in on what they're missing out on. So long as Crytek can prioritize PC over console, which shouldn't be that hard, since they're super passionate about how their game looks, which is why oftentimes during interviews of Crysis 2, I see Crytek constantly bragging about their graphics. Not that that's a bad thing.
